The Wild Goose 1965
In 1962 John Wayne purchase a 136-ft. US Navy Minesweeper and converted it into a yacht. Always a patriot, Duke had a plaque mounted on board, with the name of every sailor who had served on the ship. Of course he couldn’t christen the new yacht without special mugs for the occasion. We place the date of this mug about 1965 based on the style of the mug. These mugs spent all that time with Duke as he sailed the seven seas doing one of the things he really loved. We have also seen one other Wild Goose mug, a version that looks like it was made for a specific voyage to Alaska. The one pictured to the right is the only one we have seen with a gold handle.
